Happy New Year Carnevale!
Venetian Masks and Jewelry at Fest Gioia
Join us to celebrate the
Carnevale traditions, foods, costumes, and the most beautiful of masks at Festa Gioia New Year 2016 and
Carnevale celebrations Saturday, January 16th, and Sunday, January 17th from noon to six p.m.

The date for
Carnevale this year, also known as Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, is February 9th, the Tuesday before Lent begins. The grand opening of the celebrations in Venice will be January 23rd with the parade of boats on the Grand Canal. Watch the parade and other festivities live by webcam. Save this link (http://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/italia/veneto/venezia/canal-grande.html) and mark the date. Remember the time is nine hours ahead of California and six hours ahead of New York.
The activities going on in Venice increase each year. Check out the
many evening Grand Balls.
I love the masks and the costumes that make the magnificent city of Venezia even more colorful and filled with art. The shops are small boutiques and decorated with various designs of masks,
le maschere, with the artists

often painting as you shop. (Watch this video: https://youtu.be/A2j0rKaWo6g). The traditional masks of the 16th century, and still produced today, are made of wool papers,
carta lana. These are comfortable for wearing and make striking home décor. I enjoyed this video of some marvelous costumes and masks that are so elaborate (https://youtu.be/elJ8ULmI-v4). Pay attention to the magnificent head pieces, the complete disguise, and the sceptors!
When the celebration began in history people were entertained by acrobats, tumblers, wrestlers, and other performers. They continue to entertain to this day. Theatre performances are common in Venice, and one of the characteristics of the city which brought the aristocratic young men to Venice to study the arts and culture. The masks of the
Carnevale often have their roots in the Italian Comedy Theatre or
Commedia dell’Arte. The actors were a traveling troupe of performers in various comical characters from particular provinces in Italy. Characters were clever, acrobatic, dramatic, but always comical and had a big part in the inception of the
Carnevale Venezia. We recently enjoyed a new release film attended by the director Matteo Bini,
Io Arlecchino. {http://www.matteobini.com/#!blank/ci0). It was incredible and gave great insight in to the life of the
Commedia actor. These performances can still be found in Italy. More information for you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commedia_dell%27arte
