“If you have been to Disneyland you know about the Matterhorn. Did you know there is one side of the mountain that is in Italy? The Italian side is called Cervinia; the French side is called Breuil. It has an alpine resort in the Aosta Valley region of northwest Italy that shares a ski area with Zermatt in Switzerland. Cervinia is ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers, as well as boarders as there are no trees. Can you imagine? It is a glacier. The nearby and adjacent Zermatt has more challenging slopes. The temperature gets very cold in winter and there is skiing year round, even though it is 6,851 feet at its highest.
Many families take holidays at ski resorts in Italy at this time of year as we do here in the U.S. Children often compete for downhill ski awards. Growing up in California and frequenting South Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts with our sons, I have never skied anywhere like this glacier. I was fortunate to have this experience as a 20-year-old living in Roma. We took a train to Cervinia. For more information click here.
One of the things I love about the European culture is that they do not stop being outdoors in the winter. You will notice the beautiful coats and scarves that are part of their everyday life, so they can continue their “Piazza” life by hosting Christmas Markets with many lights and elaborate decorations. During the shortest days of the year, the holiday lights make us feel warm and festive and light, like the way in the darkness which is the spiritual meaning for Christmas and Hanukkah. Enjoy the Italian Piazza experience at Gioia and through the webcams from Zermatt, Switzerland, and Cervinia, Italy which show people as they prepare for the European Christmas Markets outdoors and great views of the mountains..
