Felice Giorno di Santo Valentino The Roman Emperor Claudius II was fighting many wars. No one in all of Rome could get married. He feared that having a family would weaken his soldiers. St. Valentine was killed because he married in secret. While he was in prison, he sent out letters to his friends and asked to be prayed for by writing, "Remember your Valentine." He died around the day of Feb 14 and so is still remembered for his bravery by the exchange of letters and gifts in honor of True Love. Happy Valentines Day!
Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday Venice Carnevale is officially Tuesday, Feb 12th. I lived in Rome in 1972 and 1973 and this was interesting reading considering it is the era that I experienced.
"...In the late 1970's a popular spirit of Venice Carnival bloomed wild, young masked gangs started to throw weethstraw and eggs to not-masqued people and spontaneous bands were playing everywhere around Venice. Soon the aggressivity dimmed and city authorities began what is now a celebration of the Carnival, mainly for tourists. Unlike many Venetian celebrations that remain almost unknown to the public, Venice Carnival seems to be thriving as much as it ever did."
So the sophisticated schedule for the Venice Carnival was developed in the years immediately after I lived there, and when I think back I can understand why the city decided to make a formal plan to celebrate!
