Carnevale, a festive season of parades, costumes, masks and food, precedes the Lenten times observed in the Christian tradition by fasting and prayer. The forty days before Easter Sunday are somber days of introspection and meditation. People prepare spiritually to meet the Risen Christ on Easter Sunday and to receive the Good News of everlasting life..

Easter Sunday is a wonderful way to celebrate the new life of springtime as well as spiritually. The eggs of Easter remind us of birth. Our family loved Aunt Margaret’s Pupo con l’Uovo, a traditional Sicilian Easter dessert. I have searched many recipes and found them mostly for creating bread baskets with hard boiled colored eggs carefully placed inside. Our aunt made the baskets with Cookie Dough!

This season is my favorite, full of hope and renewal. I love being in Italy at this time of year and have enjoyed many times, the pastries, the parades both somber and joyful, and the Vatican City Sunday morning mass filled with pilgrims from all over the world and the groups of Italian school children who make their “field trips” to the holy places with their schoolmates and teachers.
