Travels through Italia
Secondo Pezzo Mezzo Prezzo

cup and saucerOctober is here, and it's time to make adjustments from summer to autumn, with different clothes, food, shorter days, and different colors. Many people look forward to the changes. We will celebrate the changing of seasons with our Secondo Pezzo Mezzo Prezzo fall events which can be scheduled by appointment (408-640-6628) or join us on Oct 15 and 16th for Festa Gioia Open House, Come Over For Lunch Event on Saturday and/or Limoncello Making and Open House on Sunday.

We are ready for your holiday preparations! Limoncello is wonderful to make for gifts and for your hospitality around the table. Valentina is an expert and will teach you much more than how to make limoncello as she takes you on a journey through Italian cuisine, customs, and stylistic taste. This class is only taught a few times a year so clear your calendar and come this month. Lunch is included. Talking about changing colors and items of your closet? Valentina will be conducting the class "Making Friends with your Closet:" in November. Please email her if you want to attend (Valentinadesigns@comcast.net).

Our family is a combination of the Giordano family from Cosenza, the Salerno Family from Salerno, the Brigantino Family from near Agrigento (whose distant relative originated in Tuscany), and the Donato Family from Piemonte. When our father wanted to celebrate his 80th birthday he initiated a family tour of Italy. Only a part of the family could go at that time, and we still numbered 35, enough to fill a red Mercedes bus!

We began in Sorrento so the teenagers (twelve of them) could approach jet lag by relaxing at the beach. It was beautiful and wonderful, but they did not relax. With the change of hours they were up all night just like Teens in Rometeenagers and having a great time with their cousins keeping us up with the doors slamming frequently. I bring this up because of the approaching holidays and some people look forward to seeing their family and some have a hard time with it. Best to have good humor and power through. We had, in addition to twelve teens, a six-month-old baby, five family grandparents, and the rest of us were the parents of the teens, the aunts, and uncles--quite a variety of ages.

How did it go? Well, they had a great time after they recovered from getting reprimanded for ruining someone’s vacation peace and quiet while on the high dive at the pool. Soon they were floating in the salty Mediterranean off our own tour boat to the Capri Grottos. They did get up very early to see Pompeii before the temps rose to over 100, but most of the time while we were enjoying the scenery on the buses, they were sleeping. Of course the teens enjoyed the evenings and the limoncello in Sorrento.

Inlaid Wood

We have a long time family friend Sgr. Tonino that we visited, and I still buy the inlaid wooden boxes and furniture we have available for you from him. Many of our hand painted ceramic items also come from this part of Italy, the Amalfi Coast. You can visit the ceramic pages on our website and see some of the patterns. The can paint anything for you on ceramic pottery, bricks, and volcanic stone.

Dad and MaryWe visited my Italian home,Roma. Because we traveled as a group we enjoyed a great rate at the Parco dei Principe hotel across from the Villa Borghese Museum in Roma. Lee and I never miss going to see the statue of Paolina Borghese should we be in Rome. To me there is nothing like the Imperial City. Just the size of the ancient monuments will take your breath away. I was recently sitting with a best friend couple outside the Pantheon in one of the cafés feeling quite small next to the ancient temple, a forever memory for us. One of the most memorable days there was a quick and very wet rainstorm in the middle of the tropical afternoon of shopping with the kids, and a great evening of Pedro playing in the hotel lobby. Just being together with their grandfather and grandmother on a daily basis was special. Of course we spent time at the Vatican and the Piazza Navona my favorite square. We use the images of this city in many of the artworks you have ordered.

Tuscan PotteryWe traveled from Rome to Montecatini in Tuscany, a Medieval hilltop town that boasts the thermal baths we did not try, and many local Italians and Europeans on the promenade. Our Italian “daughter” Maria and her family visited us here, and we enjoyed our stay. Lee and I had been here previously to visit the Kartos Tuscan Paper Company from whom we purchase beautiful Italian paper boxes and stationary. Montecatini is 20 minutes from Florence so day trips are easy. Because we were with an Italian guide, there were no lines at the Uffizi Gallery. Montecatini is where our brothers purchased a variety of olive trees that have now been in production for over ten years producing award winning Brigantino Olive Oil, which is also available through the Gioia website. .

In Tuscany we visited the Belvedere Winery for a Tuscan country outdoor lunch. My father asked the gentleman how long his family had been in the wine business and after a minute his answer? About a thousand years. We appreciate the antiquity of the culture and arts in Italy. There are a few artists in Lucca, Florence, and Prato that create for you through Gioia company. Your wish is their delight when it comes to painting fruits, flowers, country scenes, geometric designs, religious themes for you; they love to paint them all. The statuary comes from Volterra, another beautiful medieval hilltop town in Tuscany.

St. Francis of AssisiAssisi was our next stop, our father picked the places he wanted to go for lunch in an outdoor café in the mountains via our red Mercedes bus. We watched them cook in the outdoor ovens. We love to look out over the beautiful patchwork landscape and visit the Basilica for the fantastic art paintings of Giotto. Would you like to order his artwork?

Our final destination was Venice and the Bauer Grunwald hotel, another 5-star residence that becomes much more affordable with a large group. If your family is not as big as ours, join another tour group for good rates on accommodations, use Airbnb or stay in an apartment. We arrived through the town of Verona, the birthplace and courtship of Romeo and Juliet so of course we walked through the beautiful town to visit the balcony of Juliet. In previous newsletter after much research I wrote about a Juliet Club in Verona where you can become a member.

Finally in Venice, the heartbeat of Murano Glass blowing, and from where most of our jewelry comes, the teens felt sad to be finishing our vacation and leaving Italy as they discovered with their grandparents their Italian roots. An unforgettable journey.

An afternoon with us at Gioia provides an opportunity to visit about past or upcoming trips to Italy and to actually go along with some of the artists if you have not yet planned a trip. See you at Festa Gioia Oct 15th and Limoncello Class on the 16th. And if you love music of Italy make sure to join us and support Little Italy San Jose by attending the Pasquale Esposito Concert. And Congratulations to the Italian American Heritage Foundation for 40 years of bringing language classes, regional lunches, and other events for you to enjoy. Bravo.
