Carnevale March 8th tuesday before Ash Wednesday celebrates the tradition since the 1200's and includes many events in the city of Venice over a six week period beginning around end of January and remembers the day before Lent, where Christians would abstain from their favorite foods and pastimes for forty days a real party feast as they had no refrigeration and the meats were not eaten during Lent. Gentleman scholars in Europe during the Renaissance would make Venice a must visit for the opera and arts, and from the Italian Comedia dell'arte masquerade combination with traditions before Lent, the Carnevale was born.
