Festa Gioia March 2015
Italia, the Red, White and Green

Pictoral Italian flagMany of us watched the PBS special about the Italians in America from the time of Italy's unification. Are you familiar with Rosie the Riveter posters during World War II? Though Rosina Bonavita was not the original model, she was Italian and, in fact, a riveter, and became known as Rosie the Riveter nationwide. You can read her wonderful story by clicking here.

Lady Liberty, the model for the silver dollar coin, is said to be the wife of the designer and engraver of the coin, Italian immigrant, Antonio de Francisci. Read more about him by clicking here.

A. Giannelli is a well know sculptor from Volterra, Italy. He created a bust of Dwight D. Eisenhowerwhich is still on display for all to see at the Eisenhower National Historical Sight in Gettysburg, PA. Through Gioia Company you can still purchase something from his Statues Company, now run by his son and daughter.

In Italy as well as California the hills are turning green, red poppies are blooming, and the peaks are covered with a snowy white. We are heading toward Spring. The activities and merriment of Carnevalefade into Ash Wednesday and Lent for Italians. Imagine the colorful costumes and masks, elegant grand balls, performances and parties of the Carnevale celebrations. Imagine the people putting these things away for a time of introspection and reflection. The month of March in Italy is a somber time for reflection and spiritual preparation.  Easter brings the promise of new blooms, butterflies, and new life. Easter is a season which brings hope for new beginnings in nature and in our own lives. Easter (Pasqua) is celebrated in beauty, reverence and joy throughout Italy with unique celebrations in each region. On Palm Sunday the churches are all decorated with baskets of palms and olive branches. Once they have been blessed by the priest, they are given out to the congregations. Thousands of people gather in St. Peter's Square on Palm Sunday to receive the palms blessed by the Pope after Mass has ended. It is a moving sight to behold. I was fortunate to have been in Roma one Palm Sunday at the Cathedral of Rome and on a couple Easter Sundays at the Vatican. Pilgrims come from all over the world to St. Peter's Basilica. The shop windows will be decorated with large chocolate eggs, marzipan lambs, and all the beautiful pastel colors. It is a wonderful time to travel to Italy.

Festa di San Giuseppe takes place on March 19th. People in Italy recognize St. Joseph (Giuseppe), thanking him for his intercession during the great drought Sicily experienced during the Middle Ages. The rich and the poor come together on his feast day to celebrate the miracle of the rains which ended the drought.  Perhaps it would be good for us in California to ask St. Joseph for help during our drought. The Italian-American Heritage Foundation in San Jose will be celebrating the Feast of St. Joseph (see calendar below). Spring starts on March 20 at 6:45 p.m.

Ceramic bowl painted with orangesIn addition to the red, white, and green of the Italian flag, you can add the many colors of Italy. The orange color is for the oranges grown originally in Sicily, but now are found all over the South of Italy. The orange is thought to have been cultivated in Roman times, but only in Sicily. It is a gift of nature to have in wintertime a tree that bears fruit filled with vitamin C and vibrant with the color of the sun on a grey winter day. All of Europe recognizes the Italian orange variety produced in a province in Agrigento as the Ribera Orange PDO (Protected Designation of Origin).

For many of us we are fortunate to have citrus trees in our yards and oranges--more than we can consume, what shall we do with these? You can find out on Sunday March 15th when you sign up for an Italian Cooking Class with Valentina Cirasola. She will teach us how to prepare a four-course lunch from oranges (read more below). Valentina was born in Puglia, Italy and also teaches the Limoncello (arancello) class that many of our clients have enjoyed. The Limoncello class will be scheduled in April.

During this time between the party season of Carnevale and the hope of Spring we can take a moment to be introspective and make an effort to extend more kindnesses to others. SECONDO PEZZO MEZZO PREZZO (Second Piece Half Price) during March at Gioia Company is a gift we extend to you, so join us and bring a friend on  Saturday, March 14th.  Enjoy some scenes of Puglia and join Valentina on her tour of the region.
