August Festivities
Cinque Terre, Little Houses,
and Scenic Arts, Italian Festivals

Santa Margherita LigureAugust in Italy is a time to retreat to the sea coast or to the mountains to escape the hot, humid times.  It is Ferragosto. The roots date back to 18 B.C., when the month of August was a time to relax after the harvests In combination with this ancient tradition, Christians of today go to a great degree of celebrations on August 15, the Assumption of Mother Mary, the Mother of Jesus, into Heaven. If you are in Italy at this time you can look for fireworks, boat regattas. and more. ( Photo of Santa Margherita Ligure)

A few of the coastal towns to which Italians retreat are along the Ligurian Riviera from Portofino, and Santa Margherita Ligure to the Cinque Terre, the five mountain lands along the sea. This is one of my favorite areas of Italy and near to where our grandmother was born. Santa Margherita is where I like to stay, not in August but in October, while the boats are still running up and down the coastal area.

PortofinoSanta Margherita is home to an Italian Language School which I dream of attending. There is a beautiful swimming beach and you can get a boat to Camoglie, Portofino, Rapallo, and more. There is fantastic shopping in the street markets of Santa Margherita and Rapallo, should you be there on one of those days.  Portofino is the quaint, small, picturesque port just a few miles north--a short boat or bus ride. You can also stay there, but at least go to visit the castle, church, and all the shops filled with laces and arts, and great minestrone soup! If you do come to this area in the summertime prepare for the harbors to be FILLED with fishing boats and yachts almost far as the eye can see. Videos are here and here. (Photo of Portofino.)

Just a short train ride south you will arrive at the Five Villages, the Cinque Terre: Monterosso sul Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. All beautiful towns. The Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Here is a map. Monterosso is the largest town with the most activities and a large beautiful beach.

Cinque Terre Monterosso HikeSeveral years back I hiked with my sisters {we call ourselves the
Tre Sorelle) from Monterosso to Vernazza, not a beginner walk, but somehow we saw men and women in nice dress clothes and shoes, one gentleman carrying a baby and a stroller. We do not recommend that, and I see now there is better signage. It is a steep narrow path which sometimes seems to push you in the direction of the cliff as the rock mountain wall juts out along the narrow path forcing you to lean towards the cliff and the sea below. It is a most beautiful climb with vistas of Monterosso  AND Vernazza in the distance The walk is about two miles long and takes a couple of hours. The hiking path continues on after Vernazza to the other towns. Vernazza is another charming port town with wonderful arts for purchase, such as ceramics and laces. The seafood is fresh and terrific all along the coast. (Photo Monterosso hike to Vernazza)

Coming from the other direction south to north, “one of the most unforgettable and famous trails is the Via dell'Amore which links Riomaggiore to Manarola. Taking roughly fifteen minutes, this 'Lovers Walk' offers couples the opportunity to write their names on the rocks and trees surrounding the path.”(From https://www.raileurope.com/europe-travel-guide/italy/cinque-terre/index.html) In “Manarola (by foot or by rail), you'll find a town filled with boats and tasty seafood restaurants serving fresh-from-the-sea anchovies. Manarola also has lovely swimming areas, accessible from the 'Blue Trail'--a part of the hiking path where you'll need to purchase an inexpensive access pass. Grab your suit, pack a little picnic, and find your own private swimming hole.” Cinque Terre Hike to Vernazza

If you choose to go by train that is very easy, and you will be able to see the beauty of the area. The Regionale train provides a short ride between villages. You can access the Five Lands, Cinque Terre, from the North or the South. Check in to the Cinque Terre pass and details before you go. (Photo Cinque Terre Hike to Vernazza)

I am always interested in the history and customs of a place I will visit. The first few centuries this area was only visited by pirates and those wishing not to be found! During the Second Millennium, the great maritime republics were Amalfi, Venice, Genoa and Pisa. Though always at war with one another they chased the pirates from the Ligurian Seas.

In the XIV century, thanks to the construction of the Military Arsenal of La Spezia and to the building of the railway line between Genova and La Spezia, the inhabitants of the Cinque Terre could escape isolation. This led to an increase in poverty which pushed many to emigrate abroad. In the 1970s, the development of tourism brought back wealth.” (Fromhttp://blog1.villeinitalia.com/?p=2008) The landscape has changed drastically with the terraced hills that are now filled with vineyards and cottages and the region welcoming tourism.
