February Gioia 2017!
Carnevale Venezia, San Valentino,
and Masks at Gioia

|FNAME|, February brings opportunities for la gioia, the joy, of celebrating life amid the ups and downs of living. Both the Venetian Carnevale, a grand masked, artistic and theatre celebration which begins February 11th and continues with many activities until February 28th, and Valentine’s Day, San Valentino, also celebrated in many areas of the world and certainly in the US and Italy, will be our three days of Festa in February.

Carla and MasksMEET THE ARTIST Carla Almanza-deQuant, Sunday February 12th. Carla is an award winning mask maker and sculptor who lived and studied in Italy and has traveled in various countries with her arts. While studying in Florence, Italy at the age of twenty, Carla Almanza-de Quant learned the techniques of Venetian mask-making and Commedia Dell’arte. She studied with Master Mask Maker, Professor Agostino Dessi, to learn traditional 16th and 17th century techniques. Carla incorporates eco-friendly materials into her works by utilizing wood, leaves, roots, flowers, seashells, snf corals. She sculpts in both plaster and papier-mâché, and uses live models to capture the shapes and forms of human bodies.

Her visions start in her imagination, and her sculptures magically come alive through her hands. She will reveal and showcase her new metaphysical collection of angel, fairy and butterfly designs at the open house. Carla creates on canvases, masks, bottles, wine glasses, vases, candles, and creates custom works. Choose from her many unique one-of-a-kind masks and visit her historical Commedia Dell’arte mask exhibit. Visit with her about her experiences as a  mask maker in Italy. Enjoy some of her sculptures--grand and small. You will be certain to find something you want to call your own. And talk with her about a workshop which she has done with many of you and may consider again There will be upcoming fundraising or Italian Cultural events with the Carnevale theme, so be sure to purchase your masks here at Gioia. You can host a masked party it’s a great theme!

Villa Montalvo Carneval 2016(To the left is a picture of Villa Montalvo Masked Ball Fundraiser 2016.)

Back in the 12th century there are references to masks in literature and law. Venice was a very regal and powerful region, and the Venetians all enjoyed a very affluent lifestyle. The idea of the masks is thought to have come from many different influences. At that time the mask was used when someone needed to complete a task, be it good or bad, in the very very small island of Venice and did not want to be discovered. All wore masks, costumes, elaborate jewelry (even the clergy) to take part in things that they should not do. Eventually, it is written, that the society became very decadent and laws were passed allowing for masks only at certain times, and were eventually forbidden.

MasksIn the 15th and 16th centuries the Carnevale Venezia as we know it today began between December 26th, the Feast of Santo Stefano, and the beginning of Lent, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday called Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, and Carnevale. The celebrations went dark during the world wars, and eventually around the end of the 20th century, the current Carnevale Celebrations began.

In the beginning masks were simple, like the Bauta and the Colombina masks which became incorporated into the Italian Commedy Theatre that provided comedic relief after long hard years of the plague and starvation. The arts have survived no matter the challenges in life, wars, famines, natural disasters, and dangerous events. The Italian people are currently suffering with a multitude of earthquakes to a central region of the Appenine Mountains, and most recently, an avalanche that nearly covered a four-story hotel. All resulted in the loss of many lives.

Colombina and Bauta masksAt Festa Gioia Febbraio, February 12th,  we will celebrate the Carnevale with award-winning artist, mask maker, and sculptor Carla Almanza-deQuant with fun masks and costumes to get the feel of the Venetian and the Florentine. Read the press release (click here) and learn more about Carla. Come to see her new metaphysical angel, butterfly and, fairy collections. Gioia will also be open Saturday, February 4th, and Saturday, February 11th from noon to six pm. We will also celebrate the traditions of San Valentino. You will receive more historical information when you come to Festa Gioia. We have many items to give with LOVE. And we will donate 15% of the sales, local and online, to the National Italian American Foundation to aid the victims of the earthquakes and avalanche in Italy, Thank you for sharing your love.
