Pinocchio is a favorite around the world, and Pinocchiolegno (wooden Pinocchio) is at Gioia Company this holiday season, so come and see! The original author, Carlo Collodi (the pen name for Carlo Lorenzini) who was born in Florence on Nov. 24,1826, did not like children--especially boys! When the original story was published in a series of adventures, Pinocchio, continuing to get into troubles, is described by the author as “wretched boy,” “rascal.” and “disgrace”. The author’s message in the story's first publishing in 1881 was to announce that this type of boy would end up in disaster which Pinocchio does in the original story. In 1940 Walt Disney Productions took this story of a wooden marionette, named Pinocchio, created by a woodcarver, Gepetto of course, and set it to animation in a magical way, with a happy ending. Disney made it suitable and appealing to children and parents. Now Pinocchio is a charming toy found all over Italy, but you will find his “home” in Florence. While visiting family in Italy a year ago we took the kids to the wonderful shop near the Piazza Signoria. (picture)

Fresh and local Biscotti completes your Italian hand-crafted, hand-painted plates purchase from Gioia Company this Christmas! The biscotti are made fresh by La Biscotteria in Redwood City and go beautifully with our hand painted plates made in Firenze, Deruta, and Amalfi Coast.

We will be visiting Villa Montalvo Yuletide. Come shopping in an Italian Villa in support of the Villa and their arts program in Saratoga, CA in November (read more below). In December we join the Italian American Heritage of San Jose Opera Night and Valle Monte League Christmas Tree Elegance which supports several valley charities. On Small Business Saturday, shop local at Gioia Company, with Italian-style products Italian made in Italy and the USA! In addition to "Open by Appointment" times for your convenience, Festa Gioia will be held Saturday and Sunday, November 28 and 29, from noon to 6 p.m. Please feel free to bring family members in for Thanksgiving to experience our “Come over for lunch and shopping in the Italian Tradition.” We do appreciate an RSVP for this. There is no charge for lunch.
